James F. Jackson has resided in the Rocky Mountain region most of his life, living in Wyoming and Colorado. His studio is in Sheridan, Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1981. While there, he taught in the Comprehensive Design Program and worked as Curator of Exhibits at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. He received a scholarship and traveled to Europe for nine months of study. After graduating, Jim spent some time in northern Wyoming and worked as an “artist in residence” at the Ucross Foundation. Soon after, he moved to Denver, Colorado and sold his paintings out of the Kyle Belding Gallery, one of Denver’s finest galleries. During this time he completed a large award winning mural (15x85’feet) located in the Symphony Towers Complex in San Diego, California, among many other commissioned works and paintings.

Along with his career in the Fine Arts, Jim has also developed a career in the Applied Arts. He designs and constructs fine custom leatherwork for Kings Saddlery, Wyoming’s famous saddle shop. Throughout his career he has continually developed his expertise as a fine leather craftsman. Over the past 35 years, Jim has built an international reputation and has completed works for Presidents Ronald Regan and Bill Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as well as Anthony Hopkins, Ted Turner, David Letterman, Tom Selleck, Wilford Brimley, Robert Redford, Tommy Lee Jones and many other well known individuals. He has lectured and demonstrated the processes of leather carving at the King’s Western Museum where his shop is located. He taught carving and design workshops at the “Gathering of The Masters” in Sheridan, Wyoming; the Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles, California; the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia; and most recently in Tokyo, Nara, and Kyoto, Japan.

Jim has combined the experience of many years in a well respected saddle shop with an extensive background in the Fine Arts, to create works that hold the essence of the rich western culture found in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming and Colorado.
